URGENT Request: Vulnerable Persons Standard

February 19, 2021

Dear friends and colleagues,  We are writing to ask your assistance in recruiting organizational support for this open letter asking Members of Parliament to “stop and rethink the radical and highly divisive changes proposed for Canada’s medical assistance in dying regime in Bill C7.”  We have seen the resistance to Bill C-7 grow steadily since Bill C-7 was tabled. We’d like to make sure that our elected officials know that the organizations across the country – large and small, national, regional and community-based, both within and allied with the disability rights community – are demanding better. This discriminatory legislation simply cannot pass and the battle is not yet over. To sign on as an organization, please send a quick email to info@vps-npv.ca indicating your support.  While this open letter is oriented toward organizational support, if you would like to express your objection to Bill C7 as an individual, we recommend the petition initiated by Dignity Denied. We plan to send an initial copy of the letter to MPs on Tuesday morning, Feb 23rd, so organizations should endeavour, on an emergency basis, to sign on no later than Monday evening. If you cannot meet this emergency timeline, rest assured that we will continue to update the letter as signatures come in.  This is a critical moment for all of us who are committed to human rights and social justice. Please channel all of your frustration and disappointment with the outcome of our campaign at the Senate into a loud and clear expression of solidarity and insistence.
Thank you,
Catherine Frazee, Michael Bach, Leonie Herx and Trudo Lemmens, VPS Advisors
